What are Diodes?
A diode is a two-terminal electronic component that allows current to flow in one direction while blocking current flow in the opposite direction. Diodes are made up of a p-type semiconductor material, which has an excess of positively charged “holes”, and an n-type semiconductor material, which has an excess of negatively charged electrons. The junction where these two materials meets is called the p-n junction, which is where the magic happens. This junction is a key component that allows diodes to function.
How do Diodes work?
When a voltage is applied to a diode in the forward direction with the flow of current, the electrons from the n-type material move across the p-n junction and fill the holes in the p-type material. The movement of electrons creates a current flow through the diode. However, when a voltage is applied in the reverse direction of the flow of current, the excess electrons in the n-type material are repelled by the positively charged holes in the p-type material, preventing current flow through the diode.
Why are Diodes important?
LED stands for light-emitting diodes. At its core, LEDs are a type of diode that emits light when a current is passed through them in the forward direction. LEDs are highly efficient because they convert a large portion of the electrical energy into light energy, whereas traditional incandescent bulbs waste a lot of energy as heat.
